The history of bingo in America traces to December 1929, when New York toy salesman Edwin S. Lowe discovered a carnival game called "Beano" outside Jacksonville, Georgia. Players were covering numbered cards with beans. Lowe was so taken with the excitement that he organized a game with friends in Brooklyn. During one of those early sessions, a player accidentally shouted "Bingo!" instead of "Beano!" upon winning, and the new name stuck. Lowe hired Columbia University mathematics professor Carl Leffler to design 6,000 unique non-repeating bingo cards — a task so mentally taxing that Leffler reportedly suffered for it. By 1934, just five years after Lowe's discovery, 10,000 bingo games were being played each week across America. The first charity bingo game was organized by a Catholic priest in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania in 1930 to support his parish — establishing the church-charity bingo tradition that has anchored American bingo culture ever since.
